The sugar beets are sown in the spring, we grow about 6 hectares. On 1 hectare 100.000 beet are sown. After sowing the land is fertilized and cleared of weeds. Around the end of June, the sugar beets have grown so much that the entire field is covered. One hectare of sugar beet produces over 10 times as much oxygen as 1 hectare of forest.
Between September and December, the beets are harvested. From the harbour in Oudeschild the sugar beets are transported by ship to the factory in Groningen. From 100 pounds of beet the sugar factory may gain 16 pounds. Of the remaining feed for cattle is created and energy is produced. Of 1 square meter of beets 1 kilo of sugar is made.
